We were approached by a landowner to undertake a feasibility of achieving planning consent for a new build house in the open countryside, close to Hemel Hempstead in Hertfordshire. A review of local planning policy established that the only viable route was to design a house that sought to meet the stringent requirements of a Paragraph 55 rule in the National planning act, which looks for houses of outstanding architectural merit or exemplar sustainable new dwellings.

The house itself is designed to sit closely into the landscape, maximising the slope of the terrain and primarily facing South across a wooded valley.
