We were asked to turn this ‘ugly duckling’ of a house in Twickenham into a ‘beautiful swan”. An existing rear extension was demolished and rebuilt with a contemporary rendered and timber clad box, creating a large open plan kitchen, dining and living room – served by a new utility and WC. Upstairs we reconfigured the floor with a new master bedroom, en-suite and dressing area, as well as a further en-suite to a second bedroom. In the garden we created a garden room, built under permitted development, mimicking the form of the rear extension, but with canter-levered timber louvres creating brie-soleil to create shade from the sun to the south. A palate of render and cedar cladding tie back to the main house via raised planted beds, to create a contemporary low maintenance garden.
