The Brief:

Our client purchased this Victorian terrace property in Clapham to explore innovative ways to transform a dark, compact layout into a bright and airy home.

Our initial feasibility studies focused on the journey through the house and the idea of defining different uses for a space whilst ensuring that the layout as a whole is interconnected. The layout needed to serve the client’s way of life, allowing space for entertaining but also areas for individuals to relax or work from home.

The solution:

Our architectural and interior design teams worked collaboratively with the client to provide solutions reflecting their minimal, modern taste.

Regular on-site meetings saw an evolution of the design, which captured our vision and was also considered the best approach for execution. A prime example is the central staircase. The concept was initially designed and detailed by the team at Granit. After discussions with the contractor’s team, we decided the best approach was for the staircase to be fabricated on site by their team of skilled tradespeople. The central spine was then welded on site in preparation for the timber treads, which had been formed in a nearby joinery workshop. Once completed, it was clear that the decision for on-site fabrication allowed the stairs to fit perfectly in place.

The materials used in the design were considered based on both their aesthetics and sustainability. We specified products that were made from recycled materials and had proven durability. Materials such as porcelain tiles, FSC-certified timber, locally constructed joinery and LED fittings helped ensure longevity and a reduced carbon footprint.

Externally, we worked hand in hand with a landscape designer to transform a run-down existing rear garden into an intimate, contemporary space great for entertaining.

To the front, we relocated the stairs to create external storage for a boiler and cylinder whilst also improving the accessibility to the front door at lower ground level.

Working with a trusted contractor like Strongbase Construction gave us the confidence that the highest quality and attention to detail was achieved with the final result.

The Result:

A beautifully crafted, contemporary home with carefully chosen interior finishes to showcase the clients’ personality.
