Our clients asked us to design the perfect family home in Tooting, Wandsworth; one that was flexible, able to adapt to busy lifestyles and that would accommodate the family’s two young girls. There also had to be ample space to entertain.

The solution is a contemporary rear extension at ground level, the reconfiguration of the floor plans and a full refurbishment including retaining the charming period features of the house. The large rear extension has transformed the ground floor, which previously had a contrast of small, dark rooms and awkward spaces. By replacing multiple rear extensions and reconfiguring the layout we have created a generous open plan kitchen, living and dining space. Large sliding doors, clerestory windows and two large roof lights flood this space with natural light and give an improved connection to the garden.

The two reception rooms at the front of the house have been retained and their character features upgraded. In addition to these two rooms, we have designed in a snug area which has a cosy fire and sofa arrangement. The first floor has been reconfigured, relocating the master bedroom en-suite to create a luxurious suite complete with walk-in dressing room. The remainder of the first floor includes a home office, double guest bedroom and guest shower room. The second floor has been mostly dedicated to the girls with each enjoying a large bedroom and private shower room, along with a further guest bedroom and playroom.

Additional storage has been designed into all areas, including the cellar to accommodate a laundry, plant room, and a games room (or man cave). The front and rear gardens have also been landscaped to give the house a more seamless connection to the outside spaces.
